Affordable house-made, fresh and natural cuisine, slow cooked from scratch.

Tucked away on Fremont St. in Monterey, is one of the restaurant gems of Monterey. We had been driving by this place on our way home from church for several years. I had always wanted to give it a try but we tend to have our favorite Sunday afternoon lunch spots.

I am so glad we decided to change our normal routine and give this place a visit. It was around noon and they were having their “All You Can Eat” luncheon buffet and salad bar so we figured this would be a good opportunity to sample a variety of their dishes.

And boy were we impressed. On that particular day they had some of the best Lasagna, Fire Roasted Chicken, BBQ Ribs & Fresh Salmon I have had in a long time. What was so special about these dishes is that they had exceptional seasonings and flavors. None of these were the typical dish you would find in any other restaurant.

On our first visit, Mohammad Norouzi greeted us as if we were his special guests. When we told him it was our first visit, he kindly explained what made his dishes so special. He described the special seasonings that went into his marinades and how he was once given an offer to help him bottle them up and sell them on their own.

He then talked about how they have a large emphasis on Wood Fired Cuisine and Smoked Meats. Some of their meats are smoked all day making them melt in your mouth. I was also impressed with their excellent salad bar.

So if you are looking for affordable house-made, fresh and natural cuisine, slow cooked from scratch, then I highly recommend you visit Mohammad at the Monterey Cookhouse on Fremont street. Tell him Geno sent you.

From The Website

“The Monterey Cookhouse is part of a new movement towards house-made, fresh and natural cuisine, slow cooked from scratch. Our “California Cuisine” ranges from casual to fine dining. You may feast on a hearty plate of homemade Raviolis, Chicken Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, or even a gourmet Rib Eye, wood-grilled and topped with maître d butter and served with a Twice Baked Potato and Sautéed Vegetables.

Being a Cookhouse, we also have a large emphasis on Wood Fired Cuisine and Smoked Meats. We use a Traeger Smoker, where depending on the cut, some of our meats are smoked for 10-14 hours making them melt in your mouth. We feature Smoked Game Hen, Pulled Pork, Beef Brisket, Baby Back Ribs, and on special occasions…our very popular Smoked Prime Rib Dinner. We use an oak-fired grill for our yummy ½ lb Hamburgers, delicious Steaks, and for the delectable Grilled Fish choices on our menu.

Our wood-fired pizza oven allows us to create many of your favorite Italian inspired Thin Crust Pizzas and some of our own creations. The wood smoke and high heat of this oven lends a great flavor to these items. Our grilled Oysters on the Half Shell are becoming a local legend. Pair these Oysters with a glass of wine from our very nice, and reasonably priced local wine list and you’ve really got something.

We also offer a full bar and comfortable lounge area with a two wide screen televisions for your enjoyment. We offer the best of the Local Wines, Craft & Local Beers and even local ‘Spirits’. Please join us for the “happiest” happy hour from 4:00-6:00 pm seven days a week and during Giants and A’s Baseball games with team apparel with great drink and food specials. We look forward to serving you! Stop by and see what all the locals are talking about!”
